FIFA World Cup Awards in a Nutshell

The FIFA World Cup is the most widely viewed sporting event in the world. Played once in every four years, the World Cup is watched by millions and millions of people all over the world. FIFA(Federation Internationale de Football Association) that was founded way back in 1904 is credited for taking the game outside the United Kingdom.

But despite FIFA’s best efforts, football remained as a sport that was largely confined to the Olympics. In the late 20s, backed by the then President Jules Rimet, FIFA decided to stage the world championship of football. That’s what led to the birth of the FIFA World Cup, the first of which was played in 1930.

In this edition, let us have a closer look at the various awards that are given away to recognize the best players and teams in the World Cup.

1) The Golden Ball award is given to the best player of the tournament. The winner is decided by the process of voting.
2) The Golden Shoe is awarded to the top goal scorer of the tournament.

4) The Best Young Player Award is given away to the best player aged 21 or below.
5) The FIFA Fair Play Trophy goes to the team with the best record of fair play.
6) The Most Entertaining Team as the name suggests goes to the most entertaining team of the tournament. This of course is decided by a public poll.

Apart from the six primary awards mentioned above, an All-Star team comprising of the best players in the tournament is also announced.
